Media Moment-Is "Twilight" Anti-Feminist?

Twilight is a popular book series and movie franchise. For those who do not know what it is about, here is a back story. Bella, is a girl who moved to Forks, Washington to live with her father. While she is there she falls for Edward Cullen, in her words the perfect man. Never feeling as if she belongs in the world she is in, she wants to become a vampire and live with Edward forever. However, it is her choice. At the age of 18 or 19 she becomes pregnant with a half vampire/half human baby that almost kills her. Being a fan of the books I would not have thought of Bella as Anti-Feminist. To me she is an empowering female. She makes her own choices, and doesn't back down from fear. Yes, she wanted to leave behind her family but truly she wanted the best of both worlds. When she turns into a vampire, and has her baby her father Charlie still comes over to visit.

In this article by Voynar she plays against the criticism of Twilight being Anti Feminist. Therefore, though my intro is biased towards Twilight being Feminist, do you think of Bella as someone who is anti-feminist? What is your definition of feminism?

  1. I completely agree with you. I do not think Bella is someone who is anti-feminist. I haven't read the books but I have seen all of the movies and I always saw Bella as a woman of strength and individuality which are two characteristics of what I think feminism is.

  2. This is quite interesting, the whole ant-feminist idea never crossed my mind when I saw all the Twilight sequels so far. If I have to think of it now, I would say Bella is a feminist as I believe she is a stubborn person who just did what she wanted and felt. I believe one trait of a feminist is to be "independent."
