Male Model poses in Lingerie Ad

As I was going through newspaper articles at work, I found this article:

http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2011/12/andrej-pejic-booked-a-lingerie-campaign.html

The model in the ad is not a biological woman, it is actually male model Andrej Pejic. Pejic is famous for his androgynous look, and has modeled in both men's and women's clothing. He has even been featured in FHM magazine's 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2011. However, this is his first time modeling in women's lingerie.

Is it problematic for a man to model in women's clothing? Is anyone offended by this?

  1. I don't get offended by this ad but it still bothers me because it does not challenge the stereotypical standard of beauty (white, tall, skinny, blond long hair) and gender roles (sex object: posture and look> he is a male model but it is still for the male audience)
Push-up, padded bras only tell you again that what you have is not enough. It does not matter if he is a male model, he is sending the exact same message.

  2. I agree with Julie 100%. I think because he's gifted by having this androgynous look, he should be able to fall out of the stereotype. For example, seeing him pose in women's clothing without the women-like appeal that all female models try to portray. Having the sense of male sex appeal in women's clothing would be quite interesting. Maybe wouldn't attract sales but it's something different than what we see today in magazine ads or television commercials.
